AMD and Intel Racing Again

Boot Camp feature for Friday, August 30, 2002

The race between Intel and AMD is on again. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Number one computer chip maker Intel and rival AMD are at it again. One week AMD releases new microprocessors and claims the speed crown... ..and the next, Intel ups the ante and claims it back. And with the new chips come price cuts as well. What it means for consumers in the market for new PCs... .is good news. AMD had fallen behind Intel over the last year in the speed category. Brand manager Mark DeFrere says the new Athlon XP 2400+ and 2600+ processors will change that...

"It's very important to us to make sure that our customers are getting real performance, not just megahertz, but performance on their applications that they use every day and that's exactly what the AMD Athlon XP processor provides."

AMD has been pushing for new standards to measure performance other than megahertz...

"Let's face it, at the moment it's a difficult proposition and what we want customers to be able to understand is how to actually purchase based on real software performance. We're also working on a system matrix to be able to tell very, very easily for customers, how this system performs versus that system. That's really what they want to know so that they can make an informed decision."

And the speed race will accelerate before the end of the year... .with Intel reaching the three gigahertz mark and AMD releasing its Hammer technology. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
