ATI's Latest All In Wonder

Boot Camp feature for Monday, September 30, 2002

Turning your PC into a home entertainment center. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. ATI Technologies has been building add on cards with TV tuner capabilities for PCs for the last five years. The latest generation... .arriving this fall... is the All in Wonder 9700 Pro...

"The All in Wonder 9700 Pro combines the leading DX 9 enabling graphics together with the newest multimedia center software from ATI. You can control two TV tuners at once, so that you can watch one TV show while recording another, channel scan while watching TV or just watch two TV shows at once. As well, we can use the power of the 9700 Pro graphics to de-noise the video with something we call Video Soap."

Product manager Blair Birmingham. You'll need a second tuner card to be able to watch one channel while recording another... using your PC's hard drive. The functions are much like those offered by Tivo or RePlay TV. And there are connections to let you watch on a monitor... or a TV... or both... .

"We have video inputs and outputs for all your video home appliances... S video composite inputs and S video composite and component outputs. So you can go to a DTV ready television with the All in Wonder 9700 Pro."

What ATI left out... .was a Firewire connection for digital camcorders. The card carries a pretty steep 500 dollar suggested price tag. The company faces competition from rival NVidia... .and from new entertainment PCs arriving this fall from Hewlett Packard and Microsoft. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
