Sony Chalks Up a W

Boot Camp feature for Monday, October 14, 2002

Sony chalks up a W. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony is giving Apple a run for its money again... unveiling a stylish new all in one PC it calls the Vaio W. Sony VP Mark Hanson...

"The first thing you'll notice about it is it's a wide screen. It has nearly a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, wide screen 15.3 inch LCD. The device actually has a keyboard attached to the front of it that actually pops up... much like a cover to the LCD. And in its basic form, when it's like that, it actually will show a clock and then give the ability to play back audio, either through CD or MP3s that you might have recorded on that, without ever really pulling down the keyboard and functioning it like a PC."

The PC is built behind the LCD screen and the whole thing can easily be moved from room to room. The looks are great... and the price, about 16 hundred dollars, is competitive. But you have to wonder why Sony opted for a 1.6 GHz Celeron processor instead of something faster...

"We're not so much concentrating on the speeds and feeds ... we're more focused on the usage of it."

Also missing... a remote control for the music functions. Sony is talking about... but not yet shipping in the U.S... .a device called Room Link... designed to allow music and video stored on PCs... including the W, to be networked with standard televisions around the house.
