Gateway Aims For a Bigger Picture

Boot Camp feature for Monday, November 4, 2002

Gateway aims for a bigger picture. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With the slump in sales of personals computers seeming to be endless... ..Gateway is looking for greener pastures... consumer electronics. The PC maker has announced that its stores are now selling a 42 inch high definition plasma television... .for under three thousand dollars. Senior VP for digital solutions Greg van den Dries...

"Well we're pretty excited about this shift. Just as we changed the industry in terms of how people buy personal computers, we're using our direct to consumer model to change the industry in how people buy consumer electronics and digital solutions."

The big news on the plasma screen is the under three thousand dollar price tag... ...

"It's 42 inches. It's 4 inches deep. About 70 pounds. Most of the plasmas in this range have been six to seven thousand and we're using our direct to consumer model to offer this product at significantly less."

The performance and the variety of connections available on the screen are impressive. In addition to component and composite inputs... there are RGB and digital video hookups... .for HD tuners and computers. Gateway is transforming its stores as well... into retail outlets where customers can walk out with a variety of consumer electronics products. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
