Re-Charging Without Wires... MobileWise

Boot Camp feature for Monday, December 16, 2002

Re-charging without wires. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Put your cell phone, your PDA... .and your notebook PC down on a table... .and they re-charge automatically. That's the idea behind technology invented by a company called MobileWise. Inventor and CEO Andy Goren says the charging takes place on a flat pad... .

"The device is a flat surface. You could put in on any desk, airplane tray table, train, car seats, everywhere. And basically any device that's compatible with the base that you put on top of it will transfer to it full power.

So things like notebook computers can be used while they charge. Goren says many of the biggest names in consumer electronics have signed letters of intent to use the technology... ..and adaptors will be available for many existing notebook computers and cell phones to make them compatible. Because the MobileWise chipsets control when voltage is passed from the pads to the devices... Goren says... the technology is safe...

"You can put your hand on it, you can even spill water on it. You can put also multiple devices all charge at the same time. All different manufacturers, different voltage requirements, all of them charge at the same time, all the devices."

The company hopes consumers will get charged up about the technology too. New devices that incorporate the MobileWise chipsets will begin arriving on the market during the first quarter of next year from Acer with other manufacturers to follow. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
