Fiddling Around With Nero

Boot Camp feature for Friday, July 25, 2003

Fiddling around with Nero. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Nero is one of the most popular programs used to create music CDs on computers. Ahead Software... has bundling agreements with several of the big companies that make CD-RW drives... and the company is hoping to get consumers to buy upgrades. President Udo Eberlein says the latest is Nero 6 Ultra Edition...

"Which is a complete set of digital media tools, meaning you have data, audio, you have photo and video, you have a full video editing program. You have a full back-up program. We could sell that as a stand alone retail product which we might end up maybe doing, but right now we're integrating it in the Ultra edition as part of a complete suite because we believe that the user needs to have an experience where he can do from A to Z."

Unlike many other suites... the applications in the suite are all creations of Ahead Software. If your needs are simple... basic CD burning... for instance... you may not need the 99 dollar Ultra package. But...

"There is no typical user for us. Our user base is very wide from the very technically savvy user who loves Nero because it has the most features and functionality and is stable. But as CD burning, DVD burning becomes more of a commodity you all of a sudden have your average user that just goes to Best Buy and buys a drive and all of a sudden finds he has software attached to it."

Nero initially gained popularity in Europe. It's chief competition in the U.S. is from Roxio's Easy CD and DVD Creator software. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
