Boot Camp feature for Thursday, July 31, 2003

Cisco's solution for networking music and photos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more households that have Internet connected computers... also own digital cameras. InfoTrends Research predicts the figure will be 60 percent by the end of this year. Lots of others are storing digital music on their PCs. The Linksys division of Cisco Systems has created what it calls the Wireless-B Media Adapter... to let you access those music and photo files from a TV and stereo system in a different room. Marketing director Mike Wagner...

"In the past wireless networks were used mostly for sharing data or for sharing a high speed Internet connection. But now we're seeing a wide variety of devices that attach to the wireless network. Things like your Xbox or Playstation2, your television, your stereo system."

The 200 dollar Linksys Media Adapter provides an on screen TV menu for playing digital music or viewing digital photos. A couple of drawbacks... it requires a fairly new Windows XP computer... .and it uses the 11 megabit per second 802.11b standard. That means it is designed for sharing digital still pictures... not video...

"Right now we are looking at future versions of this which will allow full motion video to be shared from the PC to the television set as well."

But Linksys faces competition on that front already. Details in an upcoming report. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
