Half a Billion Mice...and Counting

Boot Camp feature for Friday, September 12, 2003

Half a billion mice, and counting. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The world's biggest computer mouse maker... Logitech... has reached the 500 million mice sold mark..and the CEO of the company, Guerrino DeLuca thinks sales will continue to scamper along... .even as newer technologies such as speech... are used to interact with computers...

"I believe that nothing is going to take over. Certainly speech is already playing and will play a role in the interaction with digital technology in general. But it won't necessarily be a replacement. It will be a compliment. In general, I believe in the fact that the PC itself will have a bigger role in the digital home... may end up being sort of the control center of it. And therefore all the interface devices around the PC will take a bigger role in controlling your digital home."

Logitech has been going head to head with Microsoft... with the competition growing more intense in the sales of wireless keyboards and mice. Research done for Logitech shows computer users spend more time holding their mice... than their cell phones... steering wheels... or even their significant others...

"Well yes, it is certainly the most personal device you can think of. I think it defines personal computing for everybody. I don't believe that personal computing would be what it is today without a mouse."

The mouse... was invented by a team led by Doug Englebart at the Stanford Research Institute thirty five years ago. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
