Will Dell Get Into the Digital Camera Business?

Techstination feature for Monday, December 1, 2003

Will Dell get into the digital camera business? The man at the top says no. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Dell has followed Gateway into the consumer electronics arena... making LCD televisions and digital music players. But while Gateway has entered the rapidly growing digital camera business... .Michael Dell tells us when it comes to a Dell branded digital camera...

"I wouldn't expect to see anything like that anytime soon." Why not... since that's such a hot consumer electronics category? "Well I think, to your question about why couldn't you do this, why couldn't you do that... conceivably we could do a lot of things, but we don't want to try to do everything that we could possibly do. We want to do the things that are first of all more important and can create the most success. And so that one isn't one we're going to do any time soon. You got plenty of things to've got to pick priorities."

Cameras aside... how far will Dell push into consumer electronics...

Well you know more and more of the digital home experience is coming together with the PC being right at the center of that. And Dell having a leading market share position, we're very interested in providing a full set of products and services to help consumers kind of manage the digital home. So we've got LCD televisions, we've got digital printers, we've got MP3 players."

But unlike rivals HP and Gateway, no plans for digital cameras. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
