Humor on the Web...The Onion

Boot Camp feature for Monday, April 12, 1999

Political humor that isn't very politically correct, on the web. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Some of them will make you cringe, a lot of them will make you laugh. The headlines and stories in the satirical newspaper The Onion can also be found online at theonion.com. Editor-in-Chief Scott Dikkers...

"The web has about 70 percent of what the printed newspaper has. We put the late breaking news on there, we put our entertainment section on there, movie reviews, CD reviews and what-not. And we have an extensive archive on there of old stories, award winning stories."

One recent headline read "Single Marine Sent Back in Time To Resolve Kosovo Crisis. Will Assassinate Ottoman Emperor in 1389 A.D."

"We have a group of about eight writers that meet every week and we come up with all these headline ideas and the real task is sifting through those to come up with the ones that we think are good."

You'll also find some excerpts online of the new book, Our Dumb Century, a collection of The Onion's headlines covering the last 100 years...

"Yeah the first story is... A New Century Dawns...Nation's Skies Fill With Beautiful Black Smoke.

Th Onion's coverage of the Titanic reads, "World's Largest Metaphor Hits Iceberg" The Onion doesn't spare institutions or individuals from its lampoon. Quite a bit of the content, by the way, is not meant for kids.
