Bill Gates' Other Company

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, February 5, 2004

Bill Gates' other company. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The man who started Microsoft also started a company called Corbis 14 years ago...

"Corbis is one of two companies I was the founder of. Perhaps the less known of the two."

To publishers and those in the advertising business, Corbis is becoming better known all the time. It has created a business second only to Getty Images... in selling the rights to photos and video. And says CEO Steve Davis you may be carrying some of those images in your pocket right now...

"We actually are the biggest provider in the world for pictures on cell phones."

And as the popularity of big high definition screens grows... Corbis images could be on display in many homes...

"We're working a lot with companies thinking about how to make plasma screens in homes and retail stores more interesting by providing subscriptions to them."

Consumers can use the Corbis site today...

"They can go in and enter a place for personal use and can browse millions of images and download them for their own use for a small fee."

Typically about three dollars. It's fun just to search and browse through the images... which is free. Davis says the company may offer a subscription service to consumers... as well. Unlike Microsoft... Corbis has not yet made a profit... and it remains private. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
