Blurring Lines Between Video Games and Movies

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, February 10, 2004

Blurring the lines between video games and movies. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Willem Dafoe, John Cleese, Shannon Elizabeth and Heidi Klum. Is it a James Bond movie? (sound)... no it's the latest Bond video game from Electronic Arts, Everything or Nothing. The cast members, says Klum who plays a KGB agent in the game, do voice overs... .and get scanned for the computer animation... .

"I had to go to L.A.. They did a cyber-scan." What was that like? ~SYou sit on a chair and this machine basically goes all the way around you once and it goes straight away into the computer. So you see your face, your bone structure, everything completely on the computer."

Licensing deals such as the Bond franchise and Madden in football... helped Electronic Arts capture a 31 percent share of games sold for the PlayStation2 in the U.S. during the last quarter... .with eight of the top 20 selling titles in December. For Klum, best known for her modeling, the experience was a lot like making a movie...

"We're sitting the helicopter, we're jumping in the helicopter and we're out of breath. So you have to be already out of breath and you're like... . Are you sure James? Are you sure you can fly this thing? Watch out for the wall!"

Games are getting to be more and more like movies... with budgets to match. And Electronic Arts says the production costs will be even higher for the next generation consoles expected to arrive in two or three years. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
