Blackberries are Branching Out

Boot Camp feature for Friday, April 16, 2004

Blackberries are branching out. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has been about five years since Research in Motion introduced the first Blackberry…a pager like device designed to keep subscribers constantly connected with their email. Now with a million current subscribers and sales more than doubling in the last quarter…Blackberry technology is poised to turn up in some unexpected places…Palm and PocketPC devices….and a variety of cell phones. VP Mark Guibert says the popularity is growing beyond the lawyers and financial analysts who were the first to clip Blackberries on…

"The consumer sector is a vibrant and growing sector for us for personal email account integration. Geographic expansion into Europe has been steady and continues to grow very strong. And we're now in Latin America as well as Asia Pacific regions. And we're seeing a whole new range of applications on the business side."

Where the company has a new partnership with Sun Microsystems for mobile web services. On the horizon…Blackberry devices that will incorporate WiFi and Bluetooth wireless technologies. While the always on…always connected service…has been what has given Blackberry its juice….it also means owners of Blackberry cell phones…pay for two subscriptions…instead of one. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
