Art of the Century... on the Web

Boot Camp feature for Friday, April 23, 1999

Can't get to the museum? Just log on with your PC. Wait til you see what Intel has done with the Whitney. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. A newly opened exhibit at the Whitney Museum in New York tells the story of our century through the eyes of artists. Painting, sculpture, photography and film...(sound)

"This is an amazing opportunity. It's a great day for the Whitney and a great day for all who want to know more about American culture."

Whether you can get to the museum or not, says director Maxwell Anderson. That's because Intel has brought The American Century exhibit to the web. Intel Chairman Andrew Grove...says yes, you can see the paintings and such, but technology lets you do more...

"We have built in capability of mixing different media. For instance, showing art in conjunction with newsreel footage of the same period of time depicting the events that inspired that art."

And the site at artmuseum.netallows you to create a personalized guided tour that you can share with others online...

"So that for instance, an art teacher can guide a class through a pre-designed tour of art intended to illustrate certain points."

And says Grove, what we're seeing now is just the beginning...

"What we are doing today is displaying, in a richer fashion, existing art, but there's also the possibility of art being created for this new medium."

New forms of art meant to be experienced only on the web.
