The Drive to Dual Layer DVDs

Boot Camp feature for Friday, June 4, 2004

The drive to dual layer DVDs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Iomega is following Sony to the market with new DVD burners with the ability to write to dual layer DVD+R discs. They can store up to 8.4 gigabytes of video, music or data….as opposed to the 4.7 gigabyte limit of single layer discs. Iomega product manager Rick Giannini….

"The key to the drive right now is you're actually going to be able to purchase the Iomega SuperDVD 12X with dual layer capabilities for the same price as our 8X drive. So you essentially get a faster speed and dual layer capabilities for the same price."

Of 249 dollars…with a 30 dollar mail in rebate. The drive works with all of the various single layer formats that are available. One issue at the moment is blank dual layer discs…if you can find them….are expensive. Giannini thinks that will change by the end of the year….as more dual layer DVD burners arrive on the market. Why buy now?

"With the 8.5 gigabyte capacity it's really going to allow you to put a lot more video onto a single disc. Whereas before you were worried about I only have approximately 2 hours of video to put on a disc, this will now let you put four hours of video onto a single disc. So you can actually captures maybe the whole wedding versus the parts you want."

The external drive plugs into a USB 2.0 port. Iomega is also planning to release a Quick Touch version….that includes built in video capture capability. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
