Video Game Based on Military Training Tool

Boot Camp feature for Friday, July 2, 2004

A video game based on a military training tool. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's one of the hottest selling video games of the summer, THQ's Full Spectrum Warrior is designed to put players through training for the kind of warfare that appears to be very similar to the kinds of scenes from Iraq that you'll find on the evening news. The company's Tom Stratton says the Xbox game was created for the Army….

"The game was originally designed as a military tool for the soldiers at Fort Benning, the light infantry troops. And basically the game is to teach them correct doctrine in the front lines of war and urban combat. It's a squad based game and it's been adapted from that training tool with a story and built for consumer entertainment."

THQ won't say the fighting in Iraq is what is helping to drive sales. Officially it is set in the ficticious country of Zekistan. THQ credits the graphics and unique type of game play created by Pandemic Studios….

"Online, you would share with a partner. You would control one team, alpha. Your partner would control bravo and you have to communicate together on how to move, flank enemies, move corner to corner, reach your objective in a cooperative manor."

The game requires you to go through training sessions before play begins. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
