OGO.. Wireless Text Communicator

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, October 6, 2004

A wireless text communicator…for the next generation. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. AT&T Wireless calls it the OGO…a clamshell device that looks like a personal organizer and announces itself when it's turned on…(sound) It is designed strictly for instant messaging, email and SMS messaging….no voice capability at all. Ellen Webner of AT&T Wireless says there are lots of people, mostly young people, who prefer text communication…

"Teenagers or parents might love this device because they can get their teenagers off the home computer and let them IM to their heart's content really for a very reasonable price point per month. When you think about it, 17 dollars and 99 cents per month, your teenager can go off an IM all he wants and you can have your access to the home computer."

That price includes unlimited access to one email account and one instant messaging portal. AOL, MSN or Yahoo…

"The interesting thing about OGO is you do not have to be an AT&T Wireless customer to sign up. It is a complete over the air activation. You can sign up for one portal, like AOL, for 17 dollars and 99 cents a month. And if you want additional portals, it's 3 dollars 99 cents for Yahoo and MSN. You can also sign up an ISP for that price."

For email only. What's missing and would make the device useful to more people is a Web browser. OGO sells for 99 dollars after an instant rebate. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
