LCD Screen Prices Continue to Fall

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, December 2, 2004

LCD screen prices continue to fall. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With the holiday buying season kicking into high gear….you can find some great deals on flat LCD monitors…that are lightweight and take up less desk space than those big CRT monitors. It used to be that the real bargains were in 15 inch displays….but says Samsung product manager Monica Islas….

"We expect to see a lot of very aggressive pricing on the 17 inch and 19 inch LCDs in the market, especially for the consumers. We're probably going to see a couple of 19 inches in the sub-500 category, probably even as far as sub 400 dollars."

That may make it more difficult for companies like Samsung to sell higher end LCDs with new features. The company's 711T, for instance, boasts a contrast ratio of 1000 to 1 and has both analog and digital connections. Even though it sells for between 450 and 500 dollars…Islas says…

"We typically find that consumers are a little more educated than they have been in the past. Many people are into digital photography, being able to edit digital video on their displays, even home purposes doing family shots. And they're understanding how important it is to have that sharper text or being able to have shadowing."

Islas says the higher end technology will be migrating down to lower priced LCD displays in the months to come. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
