Projectors Becoming More Popular

Boot Camp feature for Monday, February 7, 2005

Turning your family room wall…into a movie screen. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Home theatre systems have become more and more popular… big screens and surround sound have gone up in quality and come down in price. And now that cable and satellite TV providers are offering more high definition channels to watch, it's easier to justify the price. But if movies…and big sports events…like the Super Bowl earlier this month….are what you really want a big screen for…a projector…is an alternative worth considering. At InFocus, consumer line senior director Jim Davis, says projectors are often used to supplement traditional TVs….

"You have people who take a projector like ours and put it in their family room and install it in the ceiling and they only use it when they want to watch a movie or when they want to watch a big event on football or if they want to watch an event on television like the Emmy awards or the Oscars or things like that. So it's really used in a lot of different ways. And the uniqueness of the technology of projection…the ability to make a huge image on a wall, whether it's temporarily or in a fixed way, is something that's unique to that technology."

The ScreenPlay 5000 is capable of true high definition and sells for under two thousand dollars. While they are brighter than they used to be…projectors still require a fairly dark room. Keep in mind, they also require bulb replacements, typically every two to four years….and that can cost several hundred dollars. Still the popularity of projectors is growing…

"We expect our growth to be around 40 percent this year."

Making the picture, pretty bright. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
