A TV, Tivo & DVD Burner All in One

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, February 8, 2005

A flat screen TV, a Tivo and a DVD recorder….all in one. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. A company called Humax, which combined Tivo technology with a DVD burner in a four hundred dollar box last year, has even bigger plans for this year. Business development VP Tony Goncalves says Humax will be selling an even more converged home entertainment unit….a 26 inch LCD TV….with a Tivo recorder built in…

"Above and beyond recording their favorite shows onto a hard drive, it's actually a DVD player-DVD recorder. So it's the Tivo experience that we've been selling here for the last six months or so, but in a nice clean package that includes a TV."

There is the issue of affording the price tag, which is expected to be about 25 hundred dollars. There are similar sized LCD screens that cost that much however. The idea of combining a Tivo with a DVD burner has worked well for Humax. For consumers, it's a way of being able to permanently keep TV shows or movies that have been recorded. The only possible problem with bundling it all together with a TV…is that if one part of it breaks…you have to do without everything…

"We work very, very close with our component manufacturers, specifically in this case our hard drive manufacturers, to ensure quality of the product. But at the end of the day, yes, if one of the components breaks, the TV needs to be serviced."
