iPod Add-ons Keep on Coming

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, July 12, 2005

The iPod add-ons keep on coming. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Take a look at the Apple online iPod store under accessories and you'll find no less than 27 kinds of speaker systems. At Harman Kardon, which also owns the JBL brand, Joe Milano says the competition is pretty intense….

"There's a lot of people coming into the market. There's definitely a lot of competition, which we're fine with. Again, I think we just try to stay above that with our design. Starting with the first design which were called the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks, just using different treatments. That one actually is a clearly speaker…down to some of the alien looking ones which we call Creature and Encounter."

And while rival Bose has created a 300 dollar SoundDock for the iPod…JBL gives that system a run for its money with its On Stage…flying saucer style docking speaker system for about half the price…

"What we try to do is just try to be a little bit different. We do all of our designs in house, they're all done in California. And we have a design group. We just try to be a little bit different. Try to be more user friendly.

In addition to the On Stage system…which is compatible and can charge all iPod models except the Shuffle, JBL also sells an iPod white folding speaker system called On Tour…that lists for about a hundred dollars. It uses a mini-jack to connect to any type of portable audio device. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
