The Wizard Names Woz

Boot Camp feature for Monday, November 28, 2005

The wizard named Woz. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. He's the guy who founded Apple Computer along with Steve Jobs. But Steve Wozniak…didn't hang around the company for too long as it grew. Any regrets?

"Oh no. I never started the company really to have a company. I almost got swung in accidentally. My goal really wasn't to start Apple and have it grow to this huge a company and be a part of it. I never grew up in my life visualizing that. So I really didn't need to stay in there. I also had a plane crash and realized that my values were getting a college degree instead of going back."

And Woz, as he is affectionately known, has spent much of his time since then working with students and teachers and advancing the cause of innovation. He's now working with the History Channel and the National Inventors' Hall of Fame to help inspire participants in an independent inventors competition, As for Apple…he still has a stake…is an Apple Fellow….and is a bit surprised that it is becoming better known to whole new generation…for music players instead of computers. But he points out…

"We started this company, actually Steve and I, with a music background, really pushing it. And boy, the number of albums we bought and talked about the songs. I was surprised to see Apple do even as well as they did. It was another Walkman phenomenon…Apple captivating the world so much."

Steve Wozniak…who, by the way, is in the midst of writing an autobiography. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
