Meet Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendell

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Meet Johnathan Wendell….a.k.a. Fatal1ty. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. 24 year old Johnathan Wendell is sitting on top of the video game world. He's earned about 230 thousand dollars this year in video game tournaments…..and about 600 thousand dollars in licensing fees for his Fatal1ty brand. 60 Minutes has interviewed him for an upcoming segment. But the climb to the top of the video gaming world has had some bumps along the way… especially when it came to relationships at home…

"I was definitely grounded about 40 percent of the time from the computer." They were just saying…you are playing too much.. "Well they knew I loved it. So that's what they always took away first. And that's something I really enjoyed…and I got tired of being handicapped by my mom and stepdad who grounded me all the time, and I decided I was going to move out to pursue my career."

The highlight, taking the 150 thousand dollar top prize last month in the Cyberathlete Professional League World Tour Grand Finals broadcast by MTV. Wendell believes that's just the start… there's great potential for the future of video gaming as a professional sport…

"I think it's definitely going to be big time. With the amount of people that play games and so forth and people that want to learn how to become better and play with the best and be the best. Everyone's talking smack back at home behind their TV. But when it comes to the real world, to like playing in a tournament against me, then they find out quickly that they're not the best in the world."
