Blue's Clues For Kids on CD ROM

Boot Camp feature for Monday, June 28, 1999

Bringing a popular children's TV show to CD ROM. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. If you have a pre-schooler, chances are I don't have to tell you about the popularity of Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues and Humongous Entertainment has been doing a great job bringing the fun to the computer screen. The show and the software get kids involved with Blue, a cartoon dog and Steve, played by Steve Burns....who says the secret is making the kids who are watching or playing, part of the action...

"I think kids are kind of inundated with choices, especially television wise and toy wise and any time that a toy or a piece of entertainment seeks to place them in the center of it and kind of really throws the focus back on them, I think they appreciate that and I think they respond to that."

There are two CD ROM titles out now. A third, Blue's Treasure Hunt, arrives in September. Blue's Clues creator Traci Johnson says the idea was to make a game show of sorts for pre-schoolers...

"Where a host asks questions to the audience and the audience becomes participatory as a part of the actual narrative of the story. That Steve needs their help in order for the game to get resolved."

And Johnson plays a role too....

Yes, it's my absolute favorite role on the show ...is I'm also the voice of Blue. Rough, rough.
