The Electronic House of the Year

Boot Camp feature for Monday, May 29, 2006

The Electronic House of the year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. When you walk in the door….you are greeted by name by a Cleopatra like avatar on a flat screen. And that's just the start. Electronic House magazine has announced the winners of its first ever house of the year contest. Editor in chief Cindy Davis says the home…overlooking Puget Sound in Washington state…is owned by Brian Conte…president of Fast Track….a company that makes the electronic greeter software…

"This home, when you walk in, the avatar will greet you. It will say hello, Fred, and give you a status of the overall home, let you know who is home. It can let you know what emails you have received, voicemails, and give you an overall status of the home."

Besides the overall winner…other homes won awards in a variety of categories…from home theatres…to kitchens…to outdoor space. When it comes to home theatres….there were four categories…with systems costing more than a quarter of a million dollars at the top….and those costing 25 to 50 thousand dollars at the bottom. But, says Davis…

"You can set up a good home theatre for much less than that. But these are the categories that we had put out there and the custom home installers generally start at that price range."
