A 3D Headset for Gaming

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, July 25, 2006

A 3d headset for gaming. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The concept isn't new. The technology landscape is littered with contraptions designed to transport game players into 3D virtual reality worlds. Some have worked pretty well over the years….but they've often been big, bulky and expensive. A company called 3001AD is one of the latest to try to make a success of the idea….with what it calls the Trimersion Head Mounted Display. CEO Jimmy Barker…

"What we find fascinating.. number one it's virtual reality, so it's first person shooters at their best. Number two is it's wireless, so you have complete Freedom of movement while you're playing the game. Number three, it's compatible with your Xbox, your PlayStation or your PC. So any of your first person shooter games that you have at home now today can be played in virtual reality, 360 degree environment. You look left you see left. You look right, you see right, you look up …you see up. You look down, four see down. The unit comes with the head mounted display unit. It comes with its own gun controller. The gun controller allows for you to move, it allows for you to shoot, it allows for you to jump, whatever functions there may be in the game itself. And then, the last piece of the kit is the base station."

The device is priced at about 400 dollars. There is competition. A company called eMagin is manufacturing headsets for both consumers and the military. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
