Can 25 Million Dollars Save the Planet?

Boot Camp feature for Friday, March 9, 2007

Can 25 million dollars save the planet? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's been a month since Sir Richard Branson and former Vice President Al Gore issued the Virgin Earth Challenge….offering a 25 million dollar prize to anyone who can come up with a way to eliminate greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Branson says…it has already spurred considerable interest in the scientific community…

"We've already had 15 thousand submissions of people who want to participate. And you never know your luck. It would just be wonderful if somebody can pull it off." What do you think the chances are? "Well my own gut feeling is that somebody will pull it off. I'm worried about saying that because what one doesn't want is people stop trying to cut back their carbon outputs and methane outputs. But just a gut feeling, based on the initial look through of all the submissions is that I think it could be possible. I think mankind has got the brain power to come up with an answer."

Sir Richard Branson….who says by the way….another venture…Virgin Galactic…should be ready to lift off with its first space tourists in two years' time. And…

"I'll be very fortunate to go on the first flight and then we've got quite a long list of people who wish to participate."

Branson says about fifty thousand people have signed up and paid small deposits. The full price…200 thousand dollars. But of course, that's round trip. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
