Boot Camp feature for Thursday, April 26, 2007

Satellite navigation everywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Portable navigation is one of the hottest consumer electronics categories....and the uses for GPS technology are growing. Navteq, a global provider of digital mapping data.....has announced the winners of its annual Global LBS Challenge competition. LBS stands for location based services. CEO Judson Green...

"In the category of navigation, for example, the winner in that particular category was called ParkWhiz Mobile...it's all about helping consumers find parking information if they're mobile. We had a winner in the business category called ComVu Media which takes advantage of camera phones with integrated GPS receivers and enables one button mobile Web casting. We had a winner in the entertainment and leisure category called TikGames GeoChief, which is an application that creates blogs, tracks routes and helps consumers navigate anywhere with mobile tools such as a compass and altimeter."

In addition to mapping data...Navteq is adding the ability to offer personalized traffic information to drivers through its acquisition of Traffic.com. Among the services you can get for free.....even if you don't have a navigation device....is a daily email....at a specified time....advising you where the traffic problems ahead of your commute. It's available for about fifty regions around the country. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
