Is it a TV or a Mobile Phone

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, May 2, 2007

Is it a TV…or is it a mobile phone. It's getting tough to tell. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. LG is the latest mobile handset maker to come out with a phone….that doubles as a TV on the new V Cast TV service from Verizon. The VX9400….competes with a TV phone previously on the market from Samsung. About the features, LG's senior director of marketing for mobile phones, Jon Maron, says….

"Obviously one of the cool things about it is you can watch live television on your phone. In addition to that, it's also got a micro SD card, you can download music and play music and you have access to contacts and your calendar, email and all the other good things. So think of all the devices that you have in your house are pretty much in the palm of your hand." What are LG's thoughts about the potential for TV on the handset? "Well you know it's a real easy thing to think about. Think about every household that has a television or two or more…and how many people spend hours a day sitting in front of their TV and wouldn't want to take it with them when they leave the house. It doesn't stick to one specific segment…everybody watches television. Whether it's Desperate Housewives or CNBC or watching Fox Sports…there's something for everybody on TV and there's something for everybody on a handset that has TV on it."

A few issues to keep in mind…V Cast TV is only available so far in select markets….and costs an extra 15 dollars a month. The TV capable phone sells for about 200 dollars with a contract. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
