The revenge of the laser printer. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Laser printers …which never really lost much ground in the corporate market….are winning back some of the small office/home office market. They've dropped dramatically in price….and have been able to exploit their cost per print advantage over ink jet printers. And new multifunction color lasers may expand the market even more….with prices dropping well under a thousand dollars. Samsung, HP, Oki Data, Epson, Canon and others are battling it out. And now Brother has joined the fray with its first color laser multifunction models that use the company's own engine. Marketing director Jeff Sandler….

"Given the fact that Brother has a pretty big footprint in the monochrome printing and multifunction laser space, the introduction and the opportunity for us to drive the market with our own color laser engine technology, is for us, a pretty big story."

The company's new 9440CN model has a suggested retail price of about 600 dollars….and can print 21 pages in color or monochrome per minute. About the tough competition, Sandler says…

"Relative to some of the other manufacturers out there, we have to offer our customers more in order to get them to look at our products. And typically when they do, they are usually pretty amazed at how many things we are offering them in terms of feature set."

While color laser printers do a great job of letting you add color to documents at an affordable price, for high quality photo printing, ink jets still have the advantage. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
