An MP3 Player for Kids

Boot Camp feature for Monday, July 9, 2007

An MP3 player….for kids. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Grown ups aren't the only ones with music collections they like to carry around with them. Kids have their favorite songs too…. but understandably parents might be a little hestitant to put a 250 dollar iPod in the hands of an eight or nine year old. Some toy makers …such as Fisher Price and Digital Blue have come out with music players designed for children. Now SanDisk has entered that end of the business with the Sansa Shaker. Product marketing manager Keith Washo…

"It gives you bright colors in MP3 players to enjoy, digital music in a very fun, easy way and also introduces interactive entertainment. You can shake the device to trigger sound effects and shake it to change songs. It's a new way of interacting with an MP3 player."

The forty dollar price tag makes it reasonable. Music is stored on an SD memory card that slips inside the Shaker…shaped like a tiny bongo drum. Some other unique features…

"Number one, it's got a built in speaker on top so you can hear music and put it down on the table, sit around with your friends and family and all listen and enjoy music. The second feature of the Sansa Shaker is that it has two headphone jacks. So this allows two people to listen to the player at the same time and both enjoy a stereo audio experience."
SanDisk has carved out the number two spot behind Apple in making music players. This isn't exactly their highest quality device…but the included features make it a good choice for kids. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
