New Services and Devices for Skype

Boot Camp feature for Monday, September 10, 2007

New services and devices for Skype. Bloomberg Boot Camp...a report on today's technology. Skype ....the Internet phone service purchased by eBay two years ago....continues to grow. It has about 220 million registered users around the world. Skype still has the free PC to PC calling feature.....but has added service like Skype To Go....which allows users to make international calls from mobile phones....at local rates.....and Skype Pro. For 3 dollars a month....it includes Skype to Go....and voicemail. Then there's Skype Unlimited. For thirty dollars per year...not per month....you get unlimited calls to any phone in the U.S. or Canada. What if you don't want to make calls with a headset attached to your computer? Skype has now certified devices from a wide variety of consumer electronics companies....including Philips, Thomson, Belkin, Logitech and NetGear. Skype's Jennifer Caukin...

"We have over 190 different devices that can be used with Skype today. Over a couple months ago we had a deal that we struck with Wal-Mart. And so now in over 18 hundred Wal-Mart stores, you can find Skype certified devices. And these range from Web cams to headsets, to phone handsets, to cordless phones. We're also seeing some really fun devices that are basically just a USB stick that allow you to take Skype with you anywere and you can use it with any PC."

While you can get a SkypeIn number to receive calls....the service is not designed for emergency use. And Skype is still recovering...reputation wise... from an outage last month that left users hung up for more than a day. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
