A Bluetooth Headset That Converts to Stereo

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, October 3, 2007

A Bluetooth headset that converts to stereo. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Plantronics calls it the Voyager 855…a device that at first glance looks like an ordinary Bluetooth headset for mobile phones. But, says Plantronics mobile products director Ron Vitale…when you want to use it to listen to music….

"You take this stereo loop which has an ear bud, stereo ear bud on the other end…and you just click it into this connector. And now you have a convertible stereo device you can use with your Bluetooth enabled music phone. So if you have what's called A2DP streaming technology in your cell phone, you can stream, wirelessly, stereo, to this headset, and also use these controls across the top to do track forward, track back, adjust the volume and pause."

For mobile calls, the headset has a sliding boom microphone. And Plantronics has included what it calls Audio IQ technology to improve clarity…

"And Audio IQ just doesn't use a noise canceling microphone, it actually uses DSP technology. So digital signal processing. And it uses a series of algorithms that actually sample the noise and then it adjusts to the environment."

Plantronics faces lots of competition in the Bluetooth space…from a growing list of competitors including Motorola and Jabra….but not much when it comes to devices that convert from a standard headset to stereo. The list price…is about a hundred fifty dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
