New Partners for Skype

Boot Camp feature for Monday, November 12, 2007

New partners for Skype. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. If you use Skype ...and about 220 million people around the world do... you might want to take a look at its newly enhanced video conferencing capability. In partnership with Logitech, Skype has upgraded the video quality....the only problem is....you need a new, higher end Web cam from Logitech and a computer with a dual core processor using a high speed Internet connection. And the company has another new partnership. This one with MySpace. Skype's VP and general manager for North America Don Albert...

"We think there's an incredible fit here with the communication that already occurs with members of the MySpace community. Posting things on each other's walls and in fact, using the MySpace instant messaging client. Now with the click of a button, they'll be able to actually call any of their friends. So we expect pretty amazing uptake. Already, even though MySpace's instant messaging client has only been in beta form and hasn't included voice, about twenty percent of users that are logged in to MySpace, are also logged in to the MySpace instant messenger and we expect that proportion to grow pretty dramatically."

While we don't know when or if it will come to the U.S., Skype is also partnering with Europe's 3 mobile carrier....which is allowing owners of some handsets to save money by having their calls routed over the Internet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
