Richard Garriott Launches Game...and Then Himself

Boot Camp feature for Monday, November 19, 2007

Lord British, as he's know to video game fans, prepares to blast off. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Richard Garriott has launched a new video game title….Tabula Rasa….and is preparing for a launch of another kind. The 46 year old ….who gained fame with his Ultima computer game series is the executive producer of the new massively multiplayer online …or MMO…game...which breaks new ground…

"The world itself, your interaction in this world, has much more impact than it does in most MMOs. In most MMOs creatures respond right where they were after you killed them. They just fade right back in so that other players can come and hunt the same creatures. Tabula Rasa…the world really changes based upon the players' taking and holding of territory."

Garriott has been a busy man. Through Space Adventures….he is scheduled to fly to the International Space Station in October of next year as the sixth space tourist. But he won't be a passive tourist…

"Privately funding access to space, like I'm doing for myself in this case, can be much more than what I'll call a vacation. And can really be an opportunity to provide important scientific activity, that I believe justifies the expense of flying to space."

And if all goes as planned…it will mark another first. He will be the first second generation American astronaut. Hi father Owen Garriott was a NASA astronaut he flew Skylab missions in the 70's and 80's. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
