Sony has become the first of the popular video game consoles to add support for what is called DivX….a video format that has become popular on the Internet. "There are over one hundred million DivX certified devices now shipping from a variety of consumer electronics companies like Philips and Samsung and Sony. Primarily DVD players, but also other devices like mobile phones and digital still cameras that support playback of DivX video. Our goal is really to make it possible for anyone to take a video from their PC and play it back on any kind of device they choose across any kind of experience..the living room or on the go or however anyone consumers media."

DivX support may be coming for the rival Xbox 360 as well. The high quality of DivX video…including high definition….make it ideal for those next gen consoles. And about the availability of content, Huntington says…

"There's a wide variety of content available from personal user generated content to secure, premium content from content providers. There is a Web site that we helped start called Stage6.com which contains a huge amount of content in DivX. And the way to think of that is kind of as a very high quality version of YouTube."
