Prime Time for Online Shopping

Boot Camp feature for Monday, November 26, 2007

Prime time for online shopping. Bloomberg Boot Camp a report on today's technology. The holiday shopping crunch for online retailers starts now….and according to a Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Microsoft….45 percent of adults in the U.S. plan to do at least some of their shopping via the Web….with nearly one in five saying most of their shopping will be done that way. But this is also prime time for online scams Microsoft group manager Tim McDowd….

"Consumers are being victimized, at least they believe they're being victimized online and found that one in four shoppers…or 26 percent …has been tricked while shopping online. So it's an important time to remind people of the things they can do to keep safe online."

One of the ways even some pretty smart people get taken in…is through phishing scams. This time of year it might be an email advertisement for a product at a price that seems to good to be true…

"The first defense is use a spam or junk mail filter in your email in box to block unwanted mails. And in general, if you don't know the sender, whether it's a company or a person, we recommend that you delete this mail. If it's a legitimate sounding and looking company, research that company. Type their name into a search engine to see if their name comes up. Most legitimate companies are not going to send you email out of nowhere. You will have had to opt into a mailing list or some sort of an offer list. So their not going to be sending you emails."

Email offers from banks and other financial institutions that appear legit….often are not. The delete key…can save you headaches and money. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
