New High Def Camcorders From Canon

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, February 5, 2008

New high def camcorders from Canon. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Lots of households have those big, flat, high definition TVs these days. And if it's time for a new camcorder….high definition models let you create your content to take advantage of the big screen. The Vixia HF10 includes 16 gigabytes of built in flash memory in addition to having a high capacity SD card slot. Canon's Paul McAniff..

"What's setting us apart in the area of flash from other manufacturers is that we also have what we call dual flash memory. Which is to say that the camera has a built in solid state memory drive, so you can record to the onboard memory or you have the option to record to the SD memory card. You can also record to the onboard memory and then transfer from that drive onto the SD memory card."

Using a flash based or hard drive based camcorder makes bringing your videos onto your PC as simple as dragging and dropping a file. The HF10 arrives next month for about 11 hundred dollars. The HF100… …will sell for about 200 dollars less…

"Which is in every way identical to the HF10. The only difference being that it doesn't have any built in memory, where the HF10 has 16 gigabytes."

Canon has plenty of competition in the HD camcorder business from Panasonic, Sony and JVC. And the consumer migration to HD home videos is well underway…

"The trend is definitely to high definition and it's going tapeless."
