Software to Make the Season Less Taxing

Boot Camp feature for Friday, March 7, 2008

Software can make this time of year less taxing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The number of people who use their personal computers to prepare their tax returns continues to grow. Last year…Intuit had about 16 million customers for its market leading TurboTax software….which was introduced 25 years ago. TurboTax vice president Bob Meighan says among the new features this year…

"The one I tend to focus on is the fact that 70 percent of Americans have some type of life change each year. Maybe they have a child, they got married or they changed jobs. Something like that and it normally causes a lot of concern when it comes to doing their taxes. New this year in TurboTax is what we call life events. And just simply by answering a few simple questions about what's changed in your life, TurboTax will tell you the impact those changes have on your tax return and will also customize the interview, or the process by which we walk you through the return. We'll customize that based on that specific change in your life."

There are a number of different versions of the software available in retail stores. You can try the online version without spending a dime…

"It's free of charge to use it. You don't pay until you're ready to file. And you know there's another new great thing this year. And that is for those people with fairly simple returns, they can actually use the TurboTax online product free of charge. There's absolutely no charge to prepare or even electronically file your return if you have a relatively simple return."
