A Better Browser for Windows Mobile

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, April 17, 2008

A better browser for Windows mobile. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. One of the big attractions of Apple's iPhone has been its ability to browse the Internet…the way you can with PC or Mac. Microsoft is playing a bit of catch up….with Windows Mobile…when it comes to browsing….but Entertainment and Devices President Robbie Bach says a new version 6.1 combined with a new mobile Internet Explorer browser….will change things….

"The whole idea behind Windows Mobile 6.1 is to enable people to get at what's in the phone and in their data much more easily. So it's better navigation, a more visible home screen that exposes more of the functionality to the user right up front, as well as a fabulous desktop Web browsing experience really designed to enable you to get to any Web site whether it's designed for mobile phones or not."

Some Windows Mobile devices are being sold by carriers for under a hundred dollars….and Bach sees that as good thing. Microsoft is trying to move Windows Mobile into the pockets of consumers…in addition to those of corporate customers…

"Well we certainly see the ability to produce very capable, quite powerful phones at lower cost as being a great thing for us and for consumers and for our partners. What it means is you're going to have devices at very low cost that are going to be able to do very high end things…accessing the Web, doing video, doing music, obviously doing email, text messaging. That's going to expand the market for smart phones, which is where we obviously play."
