Kodak Counters Counterfeiters

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Kodak counters counterfeiters. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Counterfeiting….of all kinds….is big time crime these days. And companies are using some high tech solutions to protect the goods they sell from being copied and sold as the real thing. For Kodak….it's turning into a growing business….where Steve Powell is the general manager…

"We work with the manufacturers to get our materials and put into the products as they're being produced. But they're in at such an ultra covert level that counterfeiters, if they are trying to knock off a product, can't detect the presence of our materials. And hence, they can't make a replica."

And a hand held electronic reader is able to distinguish the real thing from a counterfeit in seconds. What kinds of products? Everything from wine to consumer electronics…

"We work with kind of every brand goods company that you could imagine. We've got pharmaceutical customers that are using this to protect their prescription drugs that are being counterfeited. Cosmetics, fashion, fragrance, you know clothes, apparel. We're working with consumer electronics companies. In fact, Kodak, ourselves, have put our anti-counterfeiting technology into Kodak rechargeable batteries that are used in digital cameras."

Kodak's customers …for the most part…keep their anti-counterfeiting efforts secret to keep the bad guys guessing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
