How Much Should That Car Repair Cost? RepairPal.com

Boot Camp feature for Monday, July 21, 2008

How much should it cost for that car repair?  The Web can help.  Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology.     Many of us are at the mercy of  the local mechanic when it comes to the cost of car repairs.    A couple of new Internet start-ups aim to help.   One...RepairPal.com...was co-founded by David Sturtz...a Wall Street analyst who says he felt frustrated at not knowing whether he was getting a fair deal when a car needed fixing...

"RepairPal gives you some basic insights into what a particular repair procedure on your car should cost.  If you don't have something like RepairPal, you can spend a lot of time calling a number of different shops and trying to get price quotes.   The repair prices, we've found when we've done thousands of surveys, a pretty broadly distributed.  So you can pretty easily find yourself spending let's say a hundred dollars for a particular repair at one shop and going across town and finding another shop that will charge you three hundred dollars for the exact same procedure."

RepairPal gives you the expected range of a repair cost....and a list of shops in your area.   It will add user reviews of those shops as they come in.    The site....like its competitor DriverSide.com.....is free to use.  Sturtz says the plan is to make money through targeted advertising.   Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
