An Academic Social Network

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, September 2, 2008

An academic social network. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Social networking is part of everyday life for many if not most high school and college students. Just look at the popularity of Facebook and MySpace. Now comes a different type of social network aimed at the same demographic....TheClassConnection.com. Chief marketing officer Dave Sargent...says it is designed to bring together students at the same schools or different schools...who are studying the same subject...

"The networking aspect really comes down to helping students study more efficiently. So when they find those classmates, it's about what they can do with them. We don't have gizmo features, you don't poke anybody, you don't upload pictures, you don't do any of those social functions. What you can do, when you meet these classmates, are set up online study groups, where you can all have a central file storage. So if you're working on a research project, instead of emailing documents and research back and forth, you can store it in one place and find it very easily. You can also set up a tutoring relationship. If you need help in French 101, you can go online and see what students in your class or what TAs at your school are offering their services for tutoring in that class."

The site also ties into specific text books...allowing students to create their own flash cards in an instant. It's free to use....but keep in mind...it's for students only...at TheClassConnection.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
