Just in Time for Back to School... AskKids.com

Boot Camp feature for Monday, September 8, 2008

Just in time for back to school, a new search engine for kids. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's not the first search tool designed for young people, but the folks at Ask.com have created a new site aimed at 6 to 12 year olds. There is a focus on school work and helping kids find the information they're looking for from reliable sources. The site is AskKids.com. VP Andrea Riggs...

"We thought there was a need out there for a search engine that holds kids' interest and holds their imagination. So children learn best visually and studies prove that visual learning improves childrens' comprehension, their retention, their critical thinking. Also, children are better at mousing than typing. We built AskKids with this in mind. And the search results display is graphically vivid. It's a three panel display. The first thing the child will see is a smart answer that has every bit of information that they might need to know about their search. But it also combines related images, current events, videos and encyclopedia results."

And there are filters to block inappropriate search results. There is competition for the site from YahooKids.com and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
