Another TV Place Shifting Option

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, October 30, 2008

Another option for place shifting you cable or satellite box. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's a category that was pioneered by SlingMedia. It's Sling boxes continue to impress....allowing you to access your cable or satellite TV boxes from Windows and Mac computers and even from a growing number of smartphones. But there is competition....Sony has its LocationFree system. And a company called Monsoon Multimedia has a line of boxes on the market it calls HAVA. Executive VP Colin Stiles...

"We really have three core products in the HAVA line. We have the HAVA Platinum at the entry level. And then we have the HAVA Titanium HD at the mid-range. And then we also have the HAVA Titanium HD WiFi at the top end of our product line. And essentially what all of those products allow the consumer to do is essentially watch and control their live home television from anywhere in the world over an Internet broadband connection on a PC or on a cell phone. We have a second key or core functionality which allows the consumer within the home to stream their live home television anywhere throughout the home totally wirelessly."

The HAVA systems have some other advantages. As many as five PCs at a time can be accessing the video stream...and it also supports recording. On the downside...there is no Mac support. Pricing starts at about 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
