Firefox Simplifies Browser Add-ons

Boot Camp feature for Friday, November 28, 2008

Adding on to your browser. Firefox makes it simpler. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Mozilla....the company behind the free, open source Firefox Web browser...has welcomed add-ons of all kinds since its inception. But finding the ones that are of most interest to you....hasn't always been simple. Mozilla VP of engineering Mike Shaver says a new program called Fashion Your Firefox...aims to change that...

"Fashion Your Firefox is a Web site we're launching which packages up and makes it easier to navigate through some of the five thousand add-ons available for the Firefox browser. So it classifies them by different types of activities, research, shopping, sharing information and links. Helps you navigate through those, find add-ons that you want to have in your browser and install them seamlessly."

For instance....in the Finder and Seeker category...you'll find the StumbleUpon add-on....where co-founder Garrett Camp says it's designed to help you stumble upon Web sites that you'll most likely find to be of interest...

"When you first sign up you can say I'm interested in this type of music or this type of photography, I'm interested in cooking and gardening, things like that. We've got about five hundred different topics to choose from. And after you kind of go through that initial set of what you're interested in, over time it will learn with even greater detail what types of things you're going to like, to start to show you things from people that have very similar interests to you."

You can find the link and many more...including Shareaholic, Cooliris and Foxmarks...for synchronizing bookmarks... at fashionyourfirefox.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
