Is It The Right Time to Buy That HD TV?

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Is it the right time to buy that HD TV? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With so many people worried about their jobs, their investments, tighter credit and the economy in general....it's hard to make a case that this holiday season is the right time to spend money for a new high def TV...or other consumer electronics toys. But Sony Electronics President Stan Glasgow says pessimism tends to feed on itself. If people start buying...the economic picture brightens for retailers and manufacturers...which leads to jobs and more profits. Glasgow argues that when it comes to LCD TVs, Blu-ray DVD players and such....the bargains are out there....

"The values are very good. The pricing has come down dramatically. More than any product category almost ever in terms of electronics over the last several years. The value equation for an LCD television is extremely high."

Sony and other consumer electronics manufacturers had high hopes that the coming switch to digital TV in the U.S. in February....would lead to a big holiday selling season. So far...it isn't happening. And sales of Blu-ray high definition DVD players are lagging behind forecasts as well. Might they be hurt by the growing options to download movies via the Internet....

"I honestly don't look at it as a threat. I think certain consumers will choose to download and that will be comfortable for them. I believe an awful lot of consumers will choose to have packaged media in Blu-ray format."
