Global WiFi for the iPhone

Boot Camp feature for Friday, December 26, 2008

Global WiFi...for iPhones and the iPod Touch. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. iPass, a company that has been in the business of providing mobility services to corporate customers for years, is now making its network of 100 thousand commercial hotspots around the world available to iPhone and iPod Touch users. They can download an application from the iTunes App Store....and then subscribe...with prices starting at about 7 dollars a month. A month to month plan...without a subscription....is 10 dollars. iPass also has plans for Windows Mobile users...and for individuals who want to connect to 3G and WiFi services with notebooks. Director of product marketing Piero DePaoli...

"The same challenges that enterprise users are having are now being faced by consumers or individuals. Whether they're a small business or even a college student, people are getting used to needing Internet resources. And when you go to the airport in San Francisco, it's being operated by a different wireless provider than the airport in Chicago. You're start expanding that on a worldwide basis and the need for multiple subscriptions and multiple usernames and passwords and multiple bills can grow exponentially."

A combined plan offering 3G mobile and WiFi connectivity sells for about sixty dollars a month. As with some carriers...you will find restrictions on usage. You can find more information at ipassconnect.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
