3D TV...Coming to the Family Room

Boot Camp feature for Monday, January 19, 2009

3D movies have been around for decades. Now comes 3D TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It was one of the hot topics at this month's Consumer Electronics Show....and some of the top manufacturers...were showing flat panel screens that capable of displaying 3D programs and movies. At Panasonic, Chief Executive Yoshi Yamada, in charge of the company's North American business, says it's not a gimmick...

"I don't know how many years ago, 30 years ago, maybe more, TV was black and white and we offered color. So everything changed to color. Now a few years ago, we offered flat panel TVs, which really replaced CRT based TVs completely. Now, in a few years, we are going to offer 3D based three dimensional TV. We do believe customers will be so excited."

But will they be willing to sit in the family room wearing those special glasses that enable 3D viewing? Yamada says....

"I certainly believe so. Because you can really feel you're a part of whatever the games, whatever the movies. That's the difference."

If the lines at Panasonic's demonstration booth at the Consumer Electronics Show were an indication, Yamada may be right. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
