Lowering the Price on Pocket HD Video

Boot Camp feature for Monday, January 26, 2009

Lowering the price on pocket HD video. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The pocket camcorder business pioneered by the Flip line of cameras....has caught Kodak's attention in a big way. On the heels of the introduction of the Zi6 last year....the company has announced the Zx1...smaller in size and in price. Among the features, Kodak's chief marketing officer Jeff Hayzlett says...

"Slightly less in terms of the price. It goes from 179 to 149.99, it's got some weather proofing, a lot of other connectivity options, more aimed at the younger set."

How big might that category get and how is it different from your still cameras that can shoot video as well?

"Well it's a lot different. We're moving more to this YouTube kind of generation. And everybody wants the video, they want the real life, they want that interaction. And we've got a lot of HD video built into a lot of even our still cameras. And you can do still from any of our HD video cameras as well. So you can have a little bit of both. So it's really what you want in terms of your own form factor. So if you want that more traditional camera, we give you that. If you want something that's more of a video camera which also does still, we give you that."

Can Kodak become the leader in that category?

"We think we're going to be the leader in most categories. We run 19 product lines. We're either number one, number two or number three in all 19 of those product lines."

But there is no shortage of competition...from Flip, Audiovox with the RCA Small Wonder line and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
